Amorphophallus gigas blooming

Allen" <cm_allen at yahoo.com> on 1999.05.20 at 05:54:53(3375) Amorphophallus gigas (formerly A. brooksii) is coming into bloom in the Windows to the Tropics Conservatory at Fairchild Tropical Garden, Miami, Florida. It is the first blooming of this species at Fairchild. The tuber was grown from seed acquired with the Amorphophallus titanum seed distributed from the Dr. James Symon & Wilbert Hetterscheid expedition in 1993. The inflorescence emerged from the soil around the 1st of May. Today, Wednesday May 19th, it has grown to 4 foot. The peduncle is elongating quickly but the spadix is still hidden. As the tuber came out of dormancy, I thought this was a new leaf. By this last Monday it had become obvious. === Craig M.
