  Re: Alocasia cultivars

Having bought one of these a year and a half ago at a nursery on Hilton
Head Island,
SC after instantly falling it love with it's appearance, it was labeled:
Alocasia
'Portadora' and is the cross between A. portei and A. odora. It resembles the
common A. macrorrhizos except the leaves are larger and have a unique
crescent-cut
ruffled edge and are a different shade of green. I don't know the fancy
scientific
descriptive but it's quite distinctive and attractive. The color is
different also
and there's more contrast between the veins and stem and the rest of the
leaf. A
very attractive plant and doesn't seem to mind induced dormancy for the
past two
winters. The only odd thing I've noticed is that it never has over two mature
leaves at any one time while growing. As soon as a third one begins to
unfurl, the
older of the two will begin to decline. Anyone have any thoughts as to that?
