Anthurium williamsii ranges from Costa Rica to Ecuador from near sea level to 1,800 m. In Panama it has been collected in premontane wet, tropical wet, and premontane rain forest.

The species is placed in section Polyneurium and can be recognized by its thin, veiny blade, its violet purple spadix, and by its deep red-violet berries. It is most easily confused with Anthurium cuspidatum, which has similarly thin leaves. See the discussion under that species for the differences between the two species.
