Re: [Aroid-l] Cultivar registration latin alphabet

Hi again,

Well, maybe I'm a "rebel" but I think that every language (using the Latin alphabet) should have an alternative orthography which allows to write correctly without diacritics and accents. For example in German there are national letters =C3=A4, =C3=B6, =C3=BC, =C3=9F and they use it commonly, but these letters can be replaced by "ae", "oe", "ue" and "ss" and this is used when they have no possibility to insert the diacritics (in mobile phones, foreign operation systems and the cultivar names too). In Norway there are 2 languages - Bokm=C3=A5l, with diacritics, and Nynorsk without them. I am engaged in a project APORT (Alternative Polish Orthography) which will allow to write correctly in Polish using only the Latin alphabet. We have 9 national chars, the work is almost ready but available now only in Polish.
In relation to cultivars it is very insuitable and reckless to name them by difficult, specific to only one language words. In my opinion they should be easy to pronounce and pronounced similarly in various languages. If I created a new cultivar and thoughtlessly named it 'Szcz=C4=99=C5=9Bcie' (what in Polish means 'Luck') how would you read it, hm? So, besides the Code the plant producers should have quick wits. The code is useful but the market has its own rules.

Best,
Marek

Marek,

You are little too literal in interpreting the code =E2=80=93 there are no restrictions on accents or other diacritical marks, it is only different alphabet scripts (such as Cyrillic script) which needs to be transliterated. Don=E2=80=99t frighten off our friends in France who are only a little bit strange! I am British , myself, as you probably know, so my spelling is a little wonky too.

Hello,

And it's time to tell everybody that cultivar names can consist only of letters from the Latin alphabet.

So we say goodbye to names with =C4=9B=C5=99=C3=BD=C3=A1=C3=AD=C3=A9=C3=B6=C3=A4=C3=BC=C3=A5=C4=85=C5=9B=C4=87=C4=99=C3=B3=C5=84 etc. We'll "flatten" these letters to abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz.

Best,

Marek

Subject: [Aroid-l] Cultivar registration - the wraps are off

Greetings,

It is time to get moving on this. Our application for has been approved by the International Cultivar Registration Authority, and now we have to perform.

Cultivar registration in a few words.

WHY: I want to see it happen so that cultivar names are a matter of record (and also eventually get tied to a reference site available to all, with descriptions and images.

WHEN: The time to start is now =E2=80=93 RIGHT NOW

WHERE:  There is a great, simple form to apply for registration of a name on Aroid-l in the cultivar section

WHAT:   Any plant that seems significantly different and holds the difference when propagated vegetatively

HOW:  The cultivar name, or epithet, is submitted on the application for registration. It must be in a non-latinised form, and must sooner or later be published in print form associated with a description and preferably an image.

The epithet is then established by this publication. If the application is approved, but the epithet has not otherwise been established, the publication requirement will be met by a suitable entry in Aroideana.  Registration will then follow and lists of registered names will be published in hard-copy from time to time, and will also be displayed on the website.  Simple, right?

WHO: You, of course. This is only effective if the breeders and propagators support it.

Right now, I need help from volunteers familiar with a genus who can check the lists already available on Aroid-l, add any missing names, and give me the place and date of publication of any names that you can trace.

We are ready to go. Please be part of this.

Derek
