Anyone have any idea what this might be? Found in a garden in New Zealand.

Dear Susan,

Rather a species of Arum, but which one I don't know

There is a European species A. pictum with purple spathes

and it is the only Arum blooming in autumn -

but it happens in the Northern Hemisphere, in NZL it is spring now, so I can't tell

Marek.

Nice!

That is Arum palestinum. There are two phenotypes of which I am aware. The typical form with a nice port wine smell with the inflorescence held at the same level or slightly higher than the leaves, and a separate form from Mount Carmel that has a fecal smell with the inflorescence held below the leaves.

Happy days,

Christopher
