Dear Steve,
Aloha. I have been away in the field looking for
Hawaiian palms. Let me respond by telling you about
the past few days.
Last week, I was told of a population of palms by one
of the top botanists in Hawaii. We arranged to hike
to the palms to investigate and found that this
population will be significant biogeographically and
perhaps, taxonomically.

The next morning, we flew out to Lanai to search for
another palm that is part of an 80 year botanical
mystery. Two days of searching and we located that
palm. However, we still have not been able to answer
the mystery definitively. Sometimes discovery creates
new questions.
Botany, and taxonomy are processes. We do not always
have ready answers to all our questions. Some answers
are elusive because the herbarium sheets or the
descriptions do not match what we find in the field.
New revisions and changing concepts in defining
species are part of this process. Sometimes we work
with the best of available information....but this may
not be adequate in all cases.
Asking questions is the sign of the curious mind. It
is a healthy process. No one has control over
another's opinion. Unless the individual is willing
to discuss the matter at hand in a professional
manner, it is not worth your time. However, keep
asking questions and being a part of "the process".
