Hello Michael,

We work with three different media. Most of the smaller growing species are in pure long-strand spahgnum. A few of the very tricky species, notably Bakoa and some of the smallest Bucephalandra are in pure medium-grade (3 mm) Perlte. The robust species, such as the colonial Schismatoglottis and the large-growing Homalomena are in a mineral soil comprising 3 parts locally-sourced red volcanic soil (pH ca 4.5) and 1 part coarse washed river sand. We favour plastic pots of the Perlite and sphagnum cultures and unglazed fired terracotta for the mineral soil plants.

Best wishes

Peter
