Basically, the first reaction in the non-light dependant reaction of
photosynthesis (the "dark" reaction) is either a 3 or 4 carbon
carbohydrate. This may seem like not a big deal but it does have ecological
advatages in certain environments. C4 plants fix CO2 less efficiently but
at the same time C3 plants liberate CO2 in the presence of light
(photorespiration) where C4 plants do not.
