One of the best sources for information on plants that are on this year's auction list can be found in Aroideana, the journal of the IAS, which as you guessed, is a benefit of being a member of the IAS, so why not go ahead and join now! Instructions on how to join the IAS can be found on the IAS web site located at: http://www.aroid.org ** Updated as of July 17, 2001 8pm ** There will be a plant auction on Sept. 22nd, Saturday night, after the banquet and guest speaker event. Pictures of some of these plants are available on the IAS web site located at http://www.aroid.org The following plants will be auctioned to the highest bidder.... Items 1-6 were sent by Joep Moonen from French Guyana and grown by Denis Rotolante: +More ITEM #1 ======= 6 Dracontium sp. 'Flat Top' seedlings. From the junction of the roads to Cacao and Regina, French Guyana. *** to be auctioned as 6 separate plants *** ITEM #2 ======= 3 medium sized seedlings of Philodendron solimoesense in 6 inch pots. *** to be auctioned as 3 separate plants *** ITEM #3 ======= A big healthy piece of Philodendron ornatum (we think??? The ink washed off the tag). ITEM #4 ======= A large piece of Anthurium moonenii -- This is a new species to Horticulture and is still quite rare in collections. Dr. Croat just recently named it. It is a climbing trilobed species. ITEM #5 ======= 18 seedlings of Dieffenbachia humilis in 4 inch pots. From Campleonse, French Guyana. *** to be auctioned as 18 separate plants -- all plants will go for whatever the highest floor bid of the first plant auctioned ** ITEM #6 ======= Several pieces of Philodendron billietiae -- both narrow and broad leafed forms. A new vining species from French Guyana. *** to be auctioned as separate pieces *** ITEM #7 ======= >From the Betty Waterbury Collection, a piece of the much sought after, long leafed, semi-vining, upright Philodendron espiritu sancti. Last year the piece sold for $500.00 ITEM #8 ======= >From Denis Rotolante of Silver Krome Gardens, a 6 inch pot of Anthurium superbum. Items 9-15 were sent by Michael Pascal in Australia and grown by Denis Rotolante: ITEM #9 ======= Cyrtosperma cuspidispathum ITEM #10 ======== Dracontium pittierii ITEM #11 ======== Dracontium polyphyllum ITEM #12 ======== Alocasia lauterbachiana ITEM #13 ======== Alocasia boa ITEM #14 ======== Alocasia maximilliana ITEM #15 ======== Alocasia brancifolia ITEM #16 ======== Dracontium sp. (probably D. gigas) ITEM #17 ======== Pseudodracontium sp. - Collected in Thailand ITEM #18 ======== Amorphophallus pygmaeus - 'I have to have this!' A rather small species, but it's leaves are almost as dark as midnight and velvety. Please see Aroideana issue #19 for details. Now this is when the bidding gets intense! ITEM #19 ======== Zantedeschia collection - donated by Paul Tyerman of Australia. Z. 'Mango' - a beautiful orange and Z. 'Dominique' - purple with yellow markings. *** To be auctioned as a collection *** ITEM #20 ======== Typhonium varians - donated by Alan Galloway. A native of Thailand. ITEM #21 ======== Xanthosoma collection - donated by Alan Galloway. X. maffafa (aka X. 'Lime Zinger') with chartruese leaves and X. sagittifolium variegata with beautiful variegated petioles and some variegation in the leaves. *** to be auctioned as a collection *** ITEM #22 ======== Anchomanes collection - donated by Alan Galloway. Seedlings of A. difformis and A. giganteus. *** to be auctioned as a collection *** ITEM #23 ======== Amorphophallus konjac 'Flesh Gordon' - donated by Tony Avent of Plant Delights Nursery. Leaf petiole is flesh-colored and highlighted with tiny black dots. This is a must have for deviants (oops, I mean collectors of deviant plants). ITEM #24 ======== Amorphophallus konjac 'Pinto' - donated by Tony Avent of Plant Delights Nursery. The ultimate dwarf! This is not just a small plant, but it shows outstanding traits of dwarfism, such as a short, fat petiole, and 'heavy-looking' leaves. Imagine Arnold Schwarzenegger only being 12 inches tall and still pumped up! > >>>>Keep watching for more emails. As additional plants are donated, an updated Auction list will be sent to the Aroid-l mailing list. Now, the auction will work this way.... you send me a bid... the highest that you would be willing to pay for the plant. If the bidding on the floor stops at $50.00 and your bid to me was $100.00, you will get the plant for $55.00, if the bidding on the floor has been in $5.00 increments. If the bidding has been in $1.00 increments, you would get the plant for $56.00. Actually, I will be bidding for you as the auction is actually happening, but, I will not exceed your maximum bid. If your bid is successful, I will notify you and you can send the IAS a check and the plant will be mailed to you. If there are any questions on this procedure, send an e-mail directly to me, petra@plantdelights.com. Please do NOT hit the reply button and clog up the list. If you will be attending the Auction, you will be bidding for whatever plants interest you; I will be bidding against you in place of aroiders not able to attend the event. Prepare to bring your wallets, credit cards, checkbooks, and deeds to your homes and remember that the money made during the auction goes towards a good cause, us, the IAS. If you will not be attending the Auction, but care to make a bid and have access to the internet: Send me a PRIVATE E-MAIL to with AUCTION as the subject. In the body of the message indicate which plant you are bidding on and the maximum amount that you will pay for it. And feel free to bid on as many plants as you would like. Remember, this is a means of raising much needed funds for the IAS organization.
