Introduction & Overview

Common and Scientific Names

  • Scientific Name: Anthurium brachypodum Sodiro
  • Common Name: Short Pod Anthurium

Quick Facts

  • Origin: Found in Central and South America, primarily in Ecuador and Colombia
  • Features: Glossy, deep green leaves and relatively short, thick spadix

Taxonomy & Classification

  • Genus: Anthurium
  • Botanical Background: Named by botanist Sodiro, A. brachypodum was first described in the late 19th century. The genus Anthurium itself is one of the largest in the Araceae family, containing over 1,000 species

Natural Habitat & Distribution

  • Geographical Range: Native to the cloud forests of Ecuador and Colombia
  • Environment: Prefers moist, well-draining soils and a high-humidity environment, with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C; grows in areas with moderate to high rainfall

Morphological Characteristics

Leaves

  • Broad, ovate, and deep green
  • Leathery texture
  • Typically grow to 20-30 cm in length
  • Exhibit a shiny surface

Inflorescence (Spadix & Spathe)

  • Consists of a white or pale cream spathe and a short spadix
  • Not particularly fragrant, and pollination occurs through insect interaction

Growth Habit

  • Terrestrial species, forming clumps from a rhizome and growing in dense clusters
  • Does not climb or require support like some other Anthurium species

Cultivation & Care

Light Requirements

  • Bright, indirect light but can tolerate some direct sunlight if shaded in the hottest parts of the day

Watering & Humidity

  • Water regularly to keep the soil moist but not soggy
  • Enjoys high humidity, ideally 60% or higher

Soil & Potting Mix

  • A well-draining potting mix that retains moisture is ideal, such as a mix containing peat, perlite, and orchid bark

Temperature & Fertilizer

  • Maintain temperatures between 20°C and 25°C
  • Balanced liquid fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer), once every 4-6 weeks

Propagation Methods

Division and Cuttings

  • Easiest through division of rhizomes or stem cuttings, making sure each division has roots or a viable growing tip
  • Leaf cuttings with a section of the stem can be rooted in water or directly in the soil

Seeds

  • Seed propagation is possible but slower
  • Requiring a warm, humid environment and careful attention to moisture levels

Common Pests & Diseases

Typical Issues

  • Aphids, mealybugs, and spider mites
  • Root rot can also occur in overly wet conditions

Treatment Recommendations

  • Use insecticidal soap or neem oil for pest control
  • Ensure the plant has excellent drainage and avoid letting it sit in water

Notable Traits & Uses

  • Admired for its ornamental value, especially its ability to thrive in low-light conditions
  • Valued for its compact size and attractive foliage, making it an excellent choice for both beginners and enthusiasts looking for a striking indoor plant

Conservation & Availability

Wild Population Status

  • No immediate conservation concerns for A. brachypodum, though habitat loss in the cloud forests could potentially affect its population in the wild

Market Availability

  • Commonly available in specialty plant nurseries and online retailers, though it is less common than some other Anthurium species
