Christopher,

Adelonema is the 'new' name for the Neotropical species of Homalomena; these resolve as sister to Philodendron. Adelonema+Philodendron is sister to (now wholly Asian) Homalomena.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for that. When you say a group is "sister to" another, which one is basal or presumed to have appeared earlier? Could one say that Homalomena is sister to Adelonema+Philodendron?

Thanks,

Dylan

Hi Dylan,

Clades without molecular clock restraints are rotational, so you cannot say basal in this instance - they are simply sister to one-another. However, Nauheimer, Metzler & Renner [New Phytologist 195(4): 938–950] have a dated tree which places Adelomena basal to a Philodendron+Homalomena+Furtadoa clade.
