AWARDS & GRANTS

Supporting Global Research, Discovery & Conservation

As a part of its mission to advance research into aroids, their ecosystems, and aroid horticulture, the International Aroid Society's Awards & Grants Committee works to build relationships with scientists across a broad range of specialties to connect them with the resources they need to do this research.

Aroid Research & Conservation Grant Application Guidelines

Purpose

The purpose of International Aroid Plant Society Research and Conservation Grants is to advance understanding of the biology, ecology, natural history, and conservation of aroids.

Language

Applications must be submitted in English. Applications should include all the information requested in the application.

Eligibility

Applicants who are not working under an organization based in the United States are required to be associated with and provide a letter of support from an educational institution, government agency, NGO or similar not for profit organization. Grant funds cannot be wired to private individuals in a foreign country, nor can they be sent as ‘unrestricted’ funds, as the monies are restricted to the purposes described in the application. US applicants may be affiliated with an institution, agency or organization, or may be private individuals, but individuals who accept funds will receive an IRS 1099 form for personal tax liability. Support is available to applicants from around the world and is not restricted to individuals or institutions within the United States. Graduate students with research and/or conservation interests are encouraged to apply. Salaries are not typically provided but may be supported on a case-by-case basis. Membership in the IAS is not required in order to apply for a grant. Applications involving the removal of plants, parts or seeds from the wild must include a letter of authorization from the appropriate governmental authority and plans for their responsible disposition at the project’s conclusion.

Amounts Awarded

Grants vary in amount, depending upon the needs and nature of the project, and the potential for securing additional funds from other sources. Recipients of IAS research and conservation grants are required to submit at least one article describing their work to either the IAS Newsletter or to Aroideana. Recipients are encouraged to submit preliminary articles for publication consideration prior to the project’s conclusion

Guidelines for Expenses

Institutional overhead/indirect costs are generally not allowed. If institutional overhead is required, contact the chair of the Awards and Grants Committee before submitting an application.

Assistants: In general, the proposed work is to be carried out by the applicant(s). If an assistant is necessary, contact the chair of the Awards and Grants Committee before submitting an application.

Any expenses required to complete the proposed project should be clearly justified in the application.

Grant Duration

The duration of each grant depends upon the particular project. Funds for multi-year grants are paid in annual installments. The maximum duration of support awarded at any one time is three years. Multiyear projects are funded on an annual basis after the required satisfactory progress report has been submitted based on work from the previous year.

Additional Funding Source(s)

We encourage efforts to secure additional funds from other sources. If you are receiving, have applied for, and/or have secured a grant from another entity for this specific project or a larger project of which this project is a part, please list that organization's name and the amount of support requested or awarded.

Applicant Credentials

Please include in your resumé or CV a summary of previous work (generally one page will suffice). Include dates of completion and highlights of accomplishments that demonstrate interest and capability in relation to the proposed project.
