  • Scientific Name: Scindapsus schlechteri K.Krause
  • Common Name: Schlechter's pothos or Schlechter's devil's ivy

Quick Facts

  • Origin: Native to tropical Southeast Asia, particularly Borneo and the Philippines
  • Features: Glossy, dark green, heart-shaped leaves with subtle silver markings

Taxonomy & Classification

  • Genus: Scindapsus
  • Botanical Background: Named in honor of the botanist Georg Schlechter, who contributed to the study of Southeast Asian flora, Scindapsus schlechteri was first described by Krause in the early 20th century.

Natural Habitat & Distribution

  • Geographical Range: Native to the tropical regions of Borneo and the Philippines, typically found in lowland and montane forests. Thrives in the warm, humid environments of Southeast Asia.
  • Environment: Naturally grows in shaded, humid conditions with consistent rainfall. It is commonly found growing as an epiphyte, attaching itself to trees or other structures to climb towards light.

Morphological Characteristics

Leaves

  • Glossy, heart-shaped, and a rich dark green, often marked with light silver or grayish mottling
  • Typically grow up to 10-15 cm in length

Inflorescence (Spadix & Spathe)

  • Spadix is white or light yellow, while the spathe is greenish
  • Inflorescence is relatively inconspicuous compared to the foliage and is primarily pollinated by insects

Growth Habit

  • Climbing, vining plant, often growing epiphytically in its native habitat
  • Uses aerial roots to cling to trees or other structures and can spread widely when given the space

Cultivation & Care

Light Requirements

  • Thrives in bright, indirect light
  • Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves
  • Best to place it in a well-lit, but not sun-drenched area

Watering & Humidity

  • Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged
  • Prefers high humidity and will do well in a room with a humidifier or in a terrarium
  • Regular misting can help maintain the necessary humidity levels

Soil & Potting Mix

  • Requires a well-draining, organic potting mix that retains moisture but does not become soggy
  • A mix of peat, perlite, and orchid bark is ideal
  • Container should have good drainage to prevent root rot

Temperature & Fertilizer

  • Does best in temperatures ranging from 18-30°C (65-85°F)
  • Fertilize monthly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength

Propagation Methods

Division and Cuttings

  • Cuttings should include at least one node, as this is where new roots will form
  • These can be rooted in water or directly in a moist potting mix

Seeds

  • Rarely used for propagation as cuttings provide a faster and more reliable method

Common Pests & Diseases

Typical Issues

  • Spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs
  • Root rot can also occur if the plant is overwatered or the soil does not drain properly

Treatment Recommendations

  • Insecticidal soap or neem oil
  • Remove any affected roots, repot the plant in fresh, well-draining soil
  • Reduce watering frequency

Notable Traits & Uses

  • Prized by collectors for its attractive foliage and ability to thrive in low light conditions
  • Relatively rare find in the wild but has gained popularity in the houseplant market
  • Often used in hanging baskets or as a climbing vine
  • Glossy leaves and ease of care make it a popular choice for interior decoration

Conservation & Availability

Wild Population Status

  • No significant conservation concerns
  • Deforestation in its native habitat poses potential risks to wild populations

Market Availability

  • Not as commonly found as other aroids
  • Available in specialized plant nurseries and through online plant retailers
