Dear Steve,

Aloha.

I live in Hawaii.

The IAS can serve me personally by assembling all enthusiasts of Araceae together.  I love the scientific inquiry into the Family.  We have only scratched the surface and there is so much more to learn.  I believe the IAS should continue to publish Aroidiana as a benefit to the membership and that a seed and pollen bank for the continental US be set up.  The IAS could keep us informed on conservation issues that impact Araceae.  I would like to see more specialist Araceae scientists as well as ecologists, join the IAS.  I would also like to see a multitude of amateur enthusiasts join as well as specialist horticulturists.  The IAS must provide incentives for both groups as well as common ground to interact.

I have been fortunate to have traveled to Aroid habitats.  I live in Hawaii, where the culture of Kalo, or taro, is a main staple for the Hawaiians.  I specialize in Philodendron subgenus Meconostigma, but, I love to learn about all aroids.  Other genera that I grow include Anthurium, Schismatoglottis, Homalomena, Aglaonema, Colocasia, Alocasia, Amorphophallus, Monstera, etc.  I also love to eat the edible aroids and learn about the ethnobotany of these plants.  I have no boundaries.  The IAS has been a unique and valuable research and entertainment source for me.  I have met great friends as a result of the IAS and perhaps that is the best benefit of all.

Aloha,

Leland
