I've been growing D. vulgaris outside here in Canby OR (zone 7-8) for nearly 40 years.  Never had a bit of trouble, even during unusually cold (10 deg. F.) weather.  My corms are planted about 6" deep, in sandy soil, and mulched with a couple of inches of leaf litter.  Sprouting time and sprout hardiness are in line with the preceding responses. Let us know how they fare.
