Graziela Barroso, Brazilian aroid specialist dies at 91
From: Tom Croat Thomas.Croat at mobot.org> on 2003.06.30 at 19:41:14(10366)
Dear Aroiders:

Though I do not have the exact details as yet I wanted to report to
the Aroid Community that Graziela Maciel Barroso, certainly the oldest
aroider, recently died at age 91. Graziela worked on many groups of plants
but aroids were her favorite group. I first met Graziela in 1986 at one of
the famous weekend parties at the estate of Roberto Burle Marx, the reknown
landscape artist and painter who had developed the largest aroid collection
in South America. Graziela was at that time a young 74 years old and had
continued working after her mandatory retirement. I will get together with
some of the Brazilians who knew her well and prepare a full obituary to
follow in the IAS Newsletter or in Aroideana but I just wanted those of you
who might have known her or her work to be aware that we have lost her.
