  Amorphophallus seed production
From: Nathan Lange nelange at concentric.net> on 2003.07.23 at 20:23:02(10433)
This year, I pollinated several flowers of Amorphophallus konjac to produce
seed. Each resulting infructescence of ripening fruit, not surprisingly,
has completely inhibited the development of the leaf that is normally
produced during the summer. Since the fruit are just now ripening, does
anyone know if these bulbs will still attempt to produce a leaf this year
after the fruit is removed or will they wait until next spring to initiate
a leaf? I am concerned that they will not have sufficient time to maintain
a leaf this summer before winter arrives. Or has the production of fruit
drained the bulbs beyond recovery? In other words, are Amorphophallus
monocarpic if they produce seed?

Thanks,
Nathan
