fragrant Zantedeschia
|
From: Marie-Eve Charbonneau <charboma at ERE.UMontreal.CA> on 1997.07.14 at 01:09:08(939)
I have read somewhere that some Zantedeschia are fragrant.
Is it true, and which one ?
That 7 feet Z. "Hercule" really seems fabulous. Does it need to be standing
in water ( bog conditions) ?
Where can I have a piece........?
Thank you

According to Veld & Flora's wonderful treatise on Zantedeschia, the
following is the state of their perfume:
Z. aethiopica----------------Very slight & easily missed.
| +More |
Z.. odorata------------------Freesia-like
ssp. albomaculata-------None
Z. albomaculata------------None
ssp. valida-----------------None
Z. rehmannii----------------None
Z. jucunda-------------------None
Z. pentlandii----------------None
Z. elliottiana----------------None
I presume it's Z. odorata you seek. It's native to the cape region of
South Africa, blooms late July to August, has ovate-cordate leaves, with
wide-mouth funnel spathe of white with no purple blotch at the base. Like
most Zantedeschia, the entire spathe turns green and bends to the ground
when the fruit are mature. The berries are green and firm but
disintegrate on the ground. Unlike the other species, Z. odorata must be
kept dry in the summer because it is a winter growing plant.

B&T world seeds
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepage/B_and_T_world_Seeds/o-frame.HTM
lists Zantedeschia odorata as "As Z.aethiopica, but Frag." I have never
ordered from this company, so I can't say anything for them other then
they have the most impressive seed list I have ever seen. Can anyone out
there who has ordered from them comment on quality, prices, and service?
I'm also curious how fragrant Z. odorata is. I aquired what I thought
was Z. aethiopica from three different places and they are all slightly
different. One smells unpleasant the other two have a pleasant although
slight fragrance. One being very faint, the other quite apparent if you
stick your nose in it. Could the more fragrant one be Z. odorata, or is
it noticeably more aromatic?

Dear Aroid-L and AES;
I have looked into my Crystal Ball and seen the future. The
venerable Aroid-L and the youngster AEG are carving up the turf.
Looks like Aroid-L is becoming Tropical Aroid-L
and AEG is becoming Temperate Aroid -L
Or some such.

Or does my Crystal Ball lie?
Any thoughts about this out there?
And what could/should we do about this?

I'm new to the list, and am not familiar with AEG. Is it another aroid
discussion group?
