It is sort of like a specialty school, but not in any way affiliated with the official education system. Bushibans are commercial businesses. Many Taiwanese parents desire their children to have additional learing in certain subjects, beyond what the schools provide; bushibans provide this, each one specializing in a particular subject. I taught in one specializing in the English language -- this kind generally imports teachers from English-speaking countries. Because they are not affiliated with the school system, they will hire people without teaching certification (such as myself).
