  Gonatopus soil tips?
From: Jason Sarine <jasondsarine at hotmail.com> on 2011.01.29 at 04:48:30(21840)
This is my first season growing Gonatopus Boivinii and Angustus. Any tips for soil media? How long does angustus's tuber get? Does it need one of those super deep pots?  Thanks in advance.

Jason,

Gonatopus rhizomes tend to stay within a few inches of the surface, even breaking the surface at times. It is a fat, compact rhizome that branches occasionally and can "jump" the rim of the pot sometimes rather than circling the inside (it will do both). They are not fussy about soil. I use a sandy mix with some perlite and a little (15-20%) organic component. They require or benefit from a dry winter rest after they lose their leaves. G. boivinii seems to be better adapted to water any time of year.

Hello,
I have both - I've only had them in regular soil, and kept pretty moist - no worries with rot, for me, anyway.

I had no clue how big they get, but I just discovered that one of my bovinii tubers got to about 9 inches diameter. Beast! They are simple, but fun plants.

Howdy!

Yes: well drained!!! I use my all purpose ground aroid mix, which is sand, pumice, and peat in even amounts. Gonatopus has been in my experience very prone to rot.

Good luck,

Christopher
