  Symplocarpus foetidus
From: plantnut at shadow.net (Dewey Fisk) on 1997.12.27 at 02:51:54(1791)
I have received a request of seed of Symplocarpus foetidus from Mr. Paul M.
Olsson, Stockholmsvagen 57, S-602 17 Norrkoping, SWEDEN.

If anyone can help fulfil this request, I would appreciate it very much.
Mr. Olsson does not indicate that he has e-mail, so all correspondence will
have to be done the old fashion way. If you can help Mr. Olsson, let me
know privately and I will send you a gratitude gift plant.

Many thanks,
Dewey

Dewey,
Am putting this on Aroid-l, as some members may also find it of interest.

I don't know of a source for seed for Symplocarpus foetidus, but plants can
be purchased from:

Gardens of the Blue Ridge
P.O. Box 10
Pineola, NC 28662
Tel. 704-733-2417
fax. 704-733-8894

There Spring 98 catalog lists individual plants for $6.50 each. There catalog
does not mention any specific instructions for overseas shipments, so I don't
know if they ship overseas.

Hi Peter,

Well, the U.S. variant grows wild all over the woods behind my house by the
spring-fed streams, but they are all in active growth now of course as this
is a very early plant. If you would like to trade for something this fal I
could dig one up for you. Of course, you can buy these from either Janis
Ruksans in Latvia or Leonid Bondarenko in Lithuania as they have them
available....the influorescence on the ones from these European sources is
quite different looking than the ones in my back yard, but I believe that S.
foetidus is the only species here in the U.S. I have never personally
detected any smell from this "Skunk cabbage", but perhaps I sniff to late
:o)

If you would like one you can e-mail me personally at:
plantguy@zoominternet.net

Best of luck getting one,

Dan

Earlier in the spring a couple of people asked
about Symplocarpus and I indicated that I had these growing as weeds in my back
40. I promised trades to a couple of people on this list, but needless to
say, I have no clue who they were at this point in time. I just went out
and dug a few of these skunk cabbage as they are starting to go dormant due
to lack of water here this summer. If the 2 people that asked for them can
e-mail me privately at: plantguy@zoominternet.net I will try
to make arrangements to get them off to you. If you are no longer
interested please let me know so I can go ahead and plant them back out in the
woods rather than having them die for no good reason!

On a different note, I have a very good friend who
is interested in trading some seed of Worsleya procera for seed of Amorph
titanum if there are any fresh titanum seed out and about at this point in
time. For those of you who watch the Yahoo Worsleya group these are the
RIO clone that I have made available this summer. Again, please e-mail me
privately if anyone happens to know of any titanum seed that will be available
in the near future.

Hope everyone is having a good growing
season,

Dan
