It could be, of course, that there is no specific needful "cause" or
even an adaptive advantage once they appeared. It could be that leaf
holes just originated incidentally and were then not detrimental.
Besides, it makes the plants look cool to horticulturists, which is a
decided advantage now that people are influencing evolutionary
survival.
