Dear All
Four Alocasia have just come on the market in New Zealand and I
was wondering if anybody knows them and could tell me something about
them. I believe they came here in tissue culture from Texas. The
varieties are:
California Shield
Midnight
New Guinea Shield
Portadora
I am particularly interested in knowing something about their origins
and approximate hardiness.
Many thanks
Eric Walton

Eric,
A. x portadora is a hybrid that I believe was done here in Florida. Dewey
Fisk and Dick Mansell will know more about it than I. I have it in the
yeard in a fairly bright spot, full sun at least four or five hours per
day and it seems to be doing fine. It has endured temperatures down to 45
degrees F since I have had it. It is large and has a "trunking" habit
similar to A. macrorrhiza. The plant stands at about 1.5 meters at the
moment. Leaves are about 0.5 meter long and erect, and dark green.
I believe Dick is growing this in his yard in Tampa where it can get
considerably colder that we do here in the sub tropics.

Eric,
I can tell you about the Alocasia x portadora... It is a hybrid that was
made here in the south of Florida. Forgot the name of the chap that did
it... It will come tome in the middle of the night.... Actually, it is a
hybrid between A. odora and A. porteii... And it will get big. Is there
a chance you could put a couple of pictures up on the web someplace? That
way, we could give you much better information....
