Dears Aroiders,

Would anyone have any information about the age of the genus Spathiphyllum?

Thank you very much.

Marcus,

An interesting question. If you are speaking of potential fossil record and the like, I haven’t a clue. However, plants were being collected that would later be included in Spathiphyllum back in the mid-1800’s. Interesting also that this
genus has several Old World representatives in Southeastern Asia – at least listed in such a way as to make one thing that there are some species native to the Phillipines and Solomon Islands, and that it is not strictly a Neotropical genus. But it seems that
with relatively little pushing you could have arrived at this same information, so this may not be what you’re looking for at all. However, this answer may cause someone to respond, simply because they want to demonstrate that they know more, and that might
provide you with a closer answer to your query. Hopefully it will be shared in this venue. Good Growing!

Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,

Thanks for the info, but I'm interested in fossil records.

Best wishes

Hello

The genus is estimated at 21 Ma (7-36 Ma) now if you consider the group Spathiphyllum & Holochlamys then it’s 51 Ma (47-60 Ma)!!!

Hello,

The genus Spathiphyllum appears to be monophyletic (e.g. one origin) even if it presents actually a disjunct distribution.

Also Holochlamys seems to be included within Spathiphyllum and not a sister genus!
