[aroid-l] 'branching' petioles

Do petioles in Amorphophallus really branch? Leafves are (mostly|) determinate structures (I know legumes do odd things, but...) Surely what folks are observing is a new leaf emerging through the very tight petiolar sheath at the base of the petiole?
