Eduardo is correct about determinations. There are lots of species in the Andes of Ecuador. I know some of them but would have to have at least images of whole plants. As I said I will be in this area in March so if I could find out just where this was collected I could, and SHOULD study the species.

The Xanthosoma pictures only have inflorescences, so I think my
guess will not be specially accurated. Being Xanthosomas, even with pictures
of flowers, leaves, stems, chromosome numbers and a complete genome it
would be difficult to ID anyway!!!! Here we go: If it have huge sagittate
leaves and erect caulescent stems, it could be X. hylaea (=X. purpurata) or
any "species" of the X. undipes complex (probably more than 2 species
involved). Tom has collected a lot in Ecuador. Maybe he knows exactly which
species in the Podocarpus park has spathe tube dark purple inside.

P.S. The pollinator I know: it is a Cyclocephala beetle! (Ok... There?s
nothing new... everybody knows... even scarab beetles are easier to ID than
Xanthosoma! )
