Re: [Aroid-l] 52 new species discovered in Borneo
From: "Peter Boyce" <botanist at malesiana.com> on 2006.12.23 at 01:17:49(15000)
Fascinating news but, 52 species in the plant,
animal and fungal kingdoms combined is really the tip of the tip of an ENORMOUS
iceberg; our current research on one medium-sized aroid genus
(Schismatoglottis) will almost certainly more double the number of
species from c. 70 to 150 in Sarawak alone; Homalomena (perhaps the
largest aroid genus is Borneo) has c. 80 spp. alone in Sarawak fewer than 30
names for the whole island; Alocasia had, prior to the latest revsion just under
a decade ago recognized 21 species for Borneo (then a 47%
increase); since then a further 14 species have been recognized. Perhaps the
most striking aroid example come from Amorphophallus with currently 15
species described for Borneo and a number of others (maybe as many as 5 that we
know of... no idea how many others awaiting finding) awaiting description but as
recently as 1981 the tally for the island was just 2
species.
