[Aroid-l] spathe as a parabolic reflector?
From: Steve at ExoticRainforest.com (ExoticRainforest) on 2008.05.25 at 20:28:55(17617)
Hey guys! This idea that Chris in England has proposed about the spathe possibly being a parabolic reflector is very intruding! Think about it! If the spathe actually helps to attract the pollinator by reflecting the infrared heat as a visual attractant (torch in the dark) that would make perfect sense as a homing device in addition to the pheromone and thermogenesis. Perhaps it does not only protect the spadix. The shape of the spathe is perfect to do just that! After all, once pollination is complete it often drops off. Marc, I know you are dubious but so was I one week ago! It would certainly appear worth investigating.
