What made
me frown were the dark purple spots on the petiole, let alone that I
havn't seen too many different paeonifolius genotypes.

yes, I have heard
of paeonifolius with smooth petioles; as far as I remember selections
for agricultural use.

would not discount paeoniifolius smooth, apart from the fact that
smaller and younger plants of this species may be smooth and at a later
age warty. The red colouration in it may also point to
koratensis......... Often mistaken for paeoniifolius when in leaf.
