  Re: [Aroid-l] apobalis rupetris

Apoballis is distinguished morphologically from Schismatoglottis by the combination of infructescences more-or less-erect; pistillate and staminate zones separated by a conspicuous partly naked somwaht swollen interstice; spathe limb semi-persistent and barely opening during anthesis and then clasping the spadix, before eventually falling with spent parts of the spadix, spiny pollen (unique in the entire tribe), and petiolar sheath wings usually (but not always) deciduous.

Inflorescences (unlike Schismatoglottis) do not smell of ethyl acetate / acetic acid but rather (where known) of benzaldehyde (almond oil) or ethyl hexanoate (unripe banana).

Molecular data places Apoballis basal to all other Schismatoglottideae.
