Subject: [Aroid-l] Amorphophallus titanum pollen
I don't have any titanum pollen but I have some other species about to bloo m including,
Fuscus
Mossambicensis
Abyssinicus
Atrorubens
An unknown species from Thailand
and others just can't remember off the top of my head.
Is a hybrid out of the question?

But then the question is, why would it be called by a word that means "to b egin"?
As I think I may have suggested last time we had this conversation, I wonde r if the Arawak name for this plant was something that sounded similar, and early colonists adopted the name without changing it? We have other exampl es of plant names where this has occurred, such as sarsaparilla and sassafr as in North America.
So, in conclusion, it appears no one can answer my original question.

Hello fellow aroid lovers,
You may recall that the Houston Museum of Natural Science had an Amorphopha llus titanum bloom in 2010. This year a Houston resident who has a plant i n his orchid greenhouse is "loaning" it to us while it is in the blooming p hase. We have installed it in the Butterfly Center and expect it to genera te a lot of excitement. The owner is keen to have us try to pollinate his plant when the time comes. So - we are looking for viable pollen. Perhaps some of you have frozen pollen that you would exchange for some of the see ds, if the pollination takes? We would be very grateful! Unfortunately th e timing with the corpse plant at nearby Moody Gardens was just a little of f; their plant has already collapsed. So we are seeking a stud from farthe r afield.
Please let me know if any of you have pollen of Amorphophallus titanum tha t we could use to attempt to pollinate this plant! I think ours will open sometime mid next week. We will of course pay for shipping, etc. Please c ontact me via email (ngreig@hmns.org>) rather than phone; it is much easier to get hold of me that way!
