Dear Clarence,
Bischof wrote in his Book "Woerterbuch der beschreibenden Botanik" Stuttgart
1839 (Dictionary of the descriptive Botany Stuttgart 1839) that
atropurpureus means,
"schwarzroth" = blackred or a red thats nearly black, or "dunkelpurpurroth"
= dark purple he also cited an example: the Scabiosa atropurpurea.
I prefer these old books because they were written as this artificial latin
words were invented, so that the authors often has the better and correct
meanings of those words.
