The Aroid Community has lost a great champion. Jack Johnston passed away
about a month ago but I just got the word. Jack was not a mover and shaker
in the organized Aroid World but he was a great lover of the Family of
Araceae. I had the pleasure of going on several trips to Ecuador with Jack
and his delightful wife Lucy. They truly enjoyed the experience as did I.
Jack had problems with his knees and could not go in many of the places the
rest of the group could but he had a wonderful eye and could spot an
Anthurium from a great distance. He always brought home some of the best
plants. The evenings were particularly delightful when Jack was on a trip.
He always brought peanuts and we would sit and make a big mess with the
shells and drink 'cerveza'. Jack would always outlast the entire group.
His conversation was delightful, learned but never dominating.

Jack and Lucy were members of the IAS from the very beginning. He was a
good friend of Dr. Mike Madison who was the Aroid Specialist at Marie Selby
Botanical Garden and one of the founders of the IAS.

Truly, Jack will be missed and our love goes out to Lucy and his daughter.
