Colocasia is an Asian genus introduced to the Americas, while Xanthosoma is a native American genus. As a rule of thumb, Colocasia will have a peltate leaf blade while Xanthosomas will have a sagittate leaf blade (there are a few rare exceptions to this 'standard' rule, but not worth discussing here). The problem will come when/if you encounter Caladium, which like Colocasia has a petlate leaf blade, and occurs commonly with all-green leaves! But Caladium will generally be smaller than any Colocasia you may encounter in Mexico. Hope this helps. Write to the list again if you have any further questions, and I will try to give more details.
