Incident light meters are available from most of the big horticultural
supply house. You might start with Hummert from St. Louis - www.hummert.com
has their on-line catalogue.
I have used the GE model 214 for a number of years. I see this has been
replaced by model 217 at about three times the price, but that is the way
things go.
If you really want to impress your girlfriend, you may want to go to one of
Hummert's more expensive offerings which report in lux as well as foot
candles. This brings a little more of the literature into accessibility, but
be warned that the real work is now being done measuring the very
specialised part of the spectrum that is active for plants, and the
equipment for that comes at a horrible price. The literature can be hard
reading, too. derek burch
