[aroid-l] Cormlets of Arum italicum ssp. canariense
From: Bj?rn Malkmus malkmus at gmx.net> on 2002.09.04 at 06:20:34(9332)
Dear Aroiders,

about 20 1-year old clean dormant cormlets (each some 2 to 3 cm / 0.8 to
1.2" long) of Arum italicum ssp. canariense are available on a
"first-come-first-gets" basis. No exchange required, however reibursement of shipping costs
would be appreciated (some Euro 2.00 within Europe, respectively some US$ 3.00
for shipping outside Europe). Plants will be shipped in a protected envelop
by mid September (should go through customs without any major difficulties).

If you would like to receive one, simply send your name and complete postal
address to my private e-mail: rareplants@gmx.net
Please make sure not to press the reply button to this e-mail, as this would
be redistributed to Aroid-L!

Following a short description and some cultivation guidelines:
Subspecies native of the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands, where it
grows in rich, slightly moist soils in open spots, especially in the laurel
forest zone. Makes very large, usually horizontal corms. Easy in any humus rich,
well-drained soil in a sunny to partially shaded spot. Keep moist from
autumn to late spring and completely dry in summer during dormancy. Keep always
frostfree at a winter low of +5?C in an always sunny spot. Wintergreen
subspecies reaching up to 20 (30)cm in height, rather rare, makes dark green,
arrow-shaped leaves, sometimes with silvery to yellow-green freckles. Stems' basis
shows a typical purplish tinge. For Arum italicum it has a rather narrow,
creamy-yelllow spathe and spadix, followed by bright orange-red fruit heads in
summer. Material descends from Madeira populations.

Best wishes
