Purpose:To conduct the first comprehensive systematic revision of Philippine Cryptocoryne in more than a century, combining field exploration, detailed morphological studies, genome-scale sequencing, and chromosome analysis to resolve long-standing taxonomic uncertainties. The project aims to clarify evolutionary relationships, document species distributions, identify potential new species, and establish a robust scientific framework for the conservation of one of Southeast Asia's most unique groups of aquatic aroids. Impact:This research will provide the first modern, phylogenetically informed classification of Philippine Cryptocoryne, transforming the understanding of a genus that has remained taxonomically unresolved for generations. By conducting the first formal IUCN Red List assessments for all Philippine species, the project will replace decades of data deficiencies with evidence-based conservation evaluations, helping identify species and habitats most in need of protection. Extensive field surveys may also reveal previously undiscovered species, expanding our knowledge of the Philippines' remarkable aquatic plant diversity. The resulting taxonomic revision, updated identification key, genomic data, and conservation assessments will become essential resources for botanists, conservation agencies, botanical gardens, and researchers, providing the scientific foundation needed to protect these unique endemic aroids and their freshwater ecosystems for future generations. |
