Alocasia of the Meratus Mountains: Diversity, Ecology, Distribution, and Threat Issues

Purpose:

To conduct the first comprehensive taxonomic and ecological assessment of Alocasia in the geologically isolated Meratus Mountains of southeastern Borneo. Through extensive field exploration, herbarium research, citizen science records, and ecological surveys, the project documents species diversity, distribution, habitat preferences, and emerging threats, establishing a scientific foundation for the conservation of this understudied region.

Impact:

This research fills a critical knowledge gap in one of Borneo's least-explored botanical regions, documenting Alocasia diversity in an area where many species remain undescribed. By identifying species, mapping distributions, and highlighting threats from habitat loss and increasing pressure from the ornamental plant trade, the project provides essential baseline data for future conservation planning and species management. The resulting herbarium collections, living specimens, and ecological records will support continued taxonomic research while helping protect the unique aroid diversity of the Meratus Mountains.
