Purpose:To resolve the taxonomy, evolutionary history, and conservation needs of Idimanthus, one of the least-studied and most evolutionarily distinct genera within the Araceae. Using an integrative approach that combines field expeditions, morphological research, phylogenomics, ecological niche modeling, and historical biogeography, this project will formally describe a newly discovered species, clarify the genus evolutionary relationships within the tribe Caladieae, and identify areas of suitable habitat for future conservation efforts. Impact:This research will transform Idimanthus from a poorly understood genus into a well-defined conservation priority. By documenting a newly discovered species before it is potentially lost, reconstructing the evolutionary history of the genus using next-generation phylogenomics, and producing the first comprehensive conservation assessments for both known species, the project will provide the scientific foundation needed to protect one of the most threatened branches of the aroid family tree. The resulting taxonomic revision, phylogenomic framework, ecological niche models, and IUCN conservation assessments will guide future research and conservation planning while supporting environmental agencies responsible for protecting the biodiversity of Brazil's Atlantic Forest and Cerrado. Through open-access publications, publicly available genetic data, and collaboration with international institutions, this work will significantly expand our understanding of a previously neglected Araceae lineage and help ensure its survival for future generations. | ![]() |
